Thirteen

Well, I decided trying to fix the problem was worse than just living with the consequences of having an effed-up soul. So, after a few days more, I was done trying.

I was ready to see a wolf about a dog.

And, you know, other things.

I threw the few articles of clothing and toiletries Selma had given me into the back of the Jeep. She’d even helped me pay the ticket to get the boot removed. The tab I owed her was growing by the minute—another reason why I had to get out of here. I hated owing anybody anything.

The witch herself had followed me out and was standing on the curb. “Will you be back?”

I smiled. “Why, Selma. I think that perhaps you are sad to see me go.”

She rolled her eyes. “I always buy too many groceries.”

Aww. Selma was lonely. By her cold demeanor, I never would have guessed.

“I’ll be back. I still need your help with that portal.” I winked.

She pointed a finger like I was a bad dog. “No.”

I’d get her to crack eventually. I hopped in the front seat and rolled down the window. Selma handed me an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“Some cash for gas and emergencies.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

She gasped. “How dare you. I don’t look anywhere near old enough to be your mother. I’m adding all of this to your bill and you’ll be paying extra for the snark.”

“Double it,” I said, swiping the envelope from her hand. “And send it to Lorath.”

She laughed as I pulled away, heading for the highway.

The sucky thing was, last time, I had a navigator and Google Maps. This time, I had neither. I could remember how to get to Cascade’s territory, right?
